Pick Your Own (PYO)
At Finlay’s Place you can pick
your own fruit fresh from the
field - strawberries, raspberries,
gooseberries, blackcurrants and
redcurrants.
There is so much to be gained from
picking fresh fruits and many of us
have happy childhood memories of
doing just that. It is a wonderful way for
children to get some fresh air whilst
learning and having fun – and there’s a
tasty treat at the end. 500 g punnets
are provided into which you can pick
the produce or you can bring your own
containers.
We have the following fruit available for
picking starting in June and throughout
the summer months and into autumn.
Please keep checking our Facebook
page for the latest updates on the
picking season.
Strawberries - Elsanta variety
produces bright red, large glossy
strawberries that are very tasty and
nicely aromatic.
Blackcurrants - For a delicious
taste of British summertime that's full
of healthy benefits and purple
goodness, look no further than our
home-grown, number one superfruit,
blackcurrants. Varieties include Ben
Sarek, Ben Connan and Ebony which is
the sweetest blackcurrant ever! This
outstanding dessert variety is so
exceptionally sweet that it can be eaten
straight from the bush when fully ripe.
Blackcurrants have a high
concentration of:
•
anthocyanins
•
polyphenolic substances
•
antioxidants
•
vitamin C - blackcurrants carry four
times the amount of vitamin C as
oranges, and double the amount of
antioxidants as blueberries. The
benefits of vitamin C are many. The
body uses vitamin C to metabolize
protein and form collagen, which is
essential for skin care and anti-
aging.
•
gamma-linolenic acid (GLA)
Many health foods and drinks use
these berries. Their tartness also lends
itself to mixing with other fruits,
especially in jams and juices.
Raspberries - Glen Ample is a high
yielding mid-season variety that
produces large berries with good
flavour and colour.
Gooseberries - Invicta variety. A
vigorous, spreading bush with large,
pale green berries which are good for
both culinary and dessert use.
Redcurrants - Jonkheer van Tets
variety. Bright coloured, redcurrants
have a healthy amount of important
antioxidants, known as anthocyanins.
